Gardeners Cranham Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Cranham is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, contractors and the public. We recognise our duties under applicable health and safety legislation and seek to adopt best practice in all aspects of our work in domestic gardens, commercial grounds and communal outdoor spaces.
This policy sets out the principles and arrangements that guide our approach to managing health and safety across all gardening activities, including design, planting, maintenance, landscaping and seasonal works.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, protect health and minimise risks arising from our gardening operations. To achieve this, Gardeners Cranham will:
Identify and control hazards associated with gardening work, equipment and materials.
Provide and maintain safe systems of work, tools and machinery.
Ensure staff are trained, competent and properly supervised.
Promote a strong safety culture, where everyone takes responsibility for their own safety and that of others.
Review and improve our health and safety performance on a regular basis.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Cranham holds overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out and updated for all key gardening tasks.
Provide appropriate resources, including safe equipment, protective clothing and training.
Communicate health and safety procedures clearly to all employees and contractors.
Monitor compliance with this policy through supervision, inspections and incident reviews.
Review this policy periodically and revise it as necessary in line with changes in legislation, best practice or company operations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Cranham has a duty to work safely and to cooperate in the implementation of this policy. Employees are expected to:
Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Follow all safety instructions, training and procedures provided by the company.
Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
Report accidents, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions to management without delay.
Avoid horseplay or unsafe behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Cranham carries out risk assessments for routine and non-routine gardening tasks. These assessments identify potential hazards and set out control measures to reduce risk to an acceptable level. Typical areas covered include:
Use of powered gardening equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and blowers.
Manual handling of soil, plants, turf, paving, tools and garden waste.
Working at height for tasks such as hedge cutting, pruning and light tree work.
Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, chemicals, fertilisers and fuels.
Slips, trips and falls due to uneven ground, wet surfaces or garden debris.
Public safety in areas where work may affect access, paths or shared spaces.
Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and communicated to staff. Where necessary, work areas are cordoned or signposted to keep the public away from operating machinery and ongoing gardening tasks.
Training, Supervision and Competence
Gardeners Cranham ensures that all staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles. Training may include:
Safe operation and maintenance of gardening machinery and tools.
Manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Use, storage and disposal of gardening chemicals and fuels in line with product instructions.
Personal protective equipment use, care and limitations.
Emergency procedures, incident reporting and first aid awareness.
Less experienced team members are supervised by competent staff until they are judged able to work safely and independently. Where specialised equipment or high-risk activities are involved, only trained and authorised personnel may carry out the work.
Equipment, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening equipment and machinery used by Gardeners Cranham is selected with safety in mind and maintained in good working order. Regular checks are carried out and any defective tools are removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Personal protective equipment appropriate to the task will be provided and used as required. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and protective clothing. Employees are required to use protective equipment as instructed and to look after it properly.
Chemical, Fuel and Waste Management
When using gardening chemicals, fertilisers, fuels or other potentially hazardous substances, Gardeners Cranham follows manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data. Care is taken to prevent spills, contamination of soil or watercourses and unnecessary exposure to clients, the public, pets and wildlife.
Garden waste, soil and other materials are handled and stored safely to prevent obstruction, trip hazards or environmental harm. Waste is removed from site and disposed of responsibly in line with applicable regulations.
Client and Public Safety
We recognise that much of our work takes place in occupied gardens, shared grounds and residential settings. Gardeners Cranham plans work to minimise disruption and risk to clients, visitors and members of the public. Measures may include:
Clearly identifying work areas and, where necessary, restricting access during operations.
Positioning tools, machinery and materials so that they do not obstruct paths or exits.
Switching off machinery when people pass close by in confined spaces.
Maintaining a tidy work area and promptly clearing debris, offcuts and waste.
Communicating with clients about planned work, especially where noise, access restrictions or use of chemicals is involved.
Accidents, Incidents and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous occurrences are reported and recorded. Gardeners Cranham investigates incidents to determine root causes and identify improvements to prevent recurrence.
Findings from incident investigations, inspections and staff feedback are used to update risk assessments, procedures and training. This continuous improvement approach helps ensure that our health and safety standards keep pace with changes in our services, equipment and working environments.
Policy Review and Availability
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or in relevant legislation or guidance. Updated versions are made available to all employees and can be shared with clients on request.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Cranham aims to carry out all gardening and maintenance services safely, responsibly and with due care for everyone who may be affected by our work.
